An apparition reminiscent of Venice

In the hamlet of Ramuscello lies the ancient village of “Ramuscello Vecchio”, within which is Villa Freschi, formerly Attimis, a beautiful example of an 18th-century Venetian villa.

A poplar-lined avenue precedes a gate with the family crest, beyond which opens a large courtyard with the main residence at the end, an elegant building with stuccoes around the windows, a rusticated portal, and a central curved pediment; on the sides extend the two barchesse. At the end of the left one, the ancient church of S. Anastasia is attached, now a private chapel with rich sculptural decoration.

At the back of the villa extends the park with a lake surrounded by bald cypresses (Taxodium pendens) imported from Florida, magnolias, and oaks.

The villa, privately owned, is not open to visitors.

The character: Gherardo Freschi

Agronomist, Risorgimento patriot, typographer, publisher, public administrator, Gherardo Freschi, a member of an ancient and noble Friulian family descending from the counts of Cuccagna, can be considered a pioneer of modern agriculture. Born in 1804, he was orphaned by his father and moved to Ramuscello where he managed the estate inherited from his uncle. He had a keen interest in social solidarity: he founded the periodicals "L’educazione della donna" and "L’amico del contadino". In 1846, he promoted the foundation of the "Associazione Agraria Friulana". He participated in the revolutionary movements of 1848 and was exiled: returning to Ramuscello in 1856, he worked for the recovery of the estate. In 1871, he was elected Mayor of Cordovado.
