Gradisca Fortress City
Gradisca d'Isonzo is a jewel to be unveiled. A refined Baroque lounge, protected by the walls erected in 1479 by the Venetians against Turkish assaults. An elegant center, where austere palaces open up, softened by Baroque traces, witnesses of four centuries of Habsburg influence.
Silent alleys and romantic streets, where you can find peace and serenity.
But also very popular cafes, with tables in the greenery of the park where the gaze is lost among trees and grass.
A visit to Gradisca takes you along the walls with the six mighty towers, called della Campana, di San Giorgio, del Portello, della Spiritata, della Marcella, and della Calcina, and with the two gates: Porta Nuova and Porta del Soccorso. Inside the walls, the Castle with the Palazzo del Capitano. In the center, Palazzo Torriani, of Palladian inspiration, which today houses the Town Hall, the Cathedral with its Baroque facade, and the 15th-century church of the Addolorata.
Gradisca means art and culture. Gradisca also means tradition in hospitality and the culture of food and wine: a true treasure to discover.
In 2023, pedestrian tourist itineraries were introduced, allowing tourists to independently enjoy two cultural routes (named “I Palazzi fra Venezia e Impero”, “Il Castello e le Mura”) to enhance the city's historical and architectural heritage.
To the two cultural routes, the section of the Alpe Adria Trail that reaches the town and a 6.5 km green route following the city parks and green areas along the Isonzo river, named “I Parchi e le Aree Verdi”, have been added.
For the “Il Castello e le Mura” route, free guided tours are also available, accessible from April to November by reservation at this page.
The "I Parchi e le Aree Verdi" route includes naturalistic guided tours, organized by the Associazione Aeson Atlas, bookable at this link
