A millenary abbey, in the green of the Friulian plain. A village born around the ancient monastery. An oasis of peace and silence where one can find themselves. A special place, carved out in the infinity of the universe, where you always feel at home. Welcome to Sesto al Reghena, welcome to the Terre degli Abati. 

In the lower Friulian plain at the border with Veneto, cultivated fields along the ancient Roman road announce a land rich in greenery and waters: the land of the abbots. 

Everything began in the mid-8th century, in the last phase of the Lombard era, when three brothers founded the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria di Sesto, which from the banks of the Reghena would then spread, in its long history, power, spirituality, and art. The river flows placidly and gently through the countryside bordered by hedges and descends among the banks blooming with linden trees, between water meadows and stable meadows. The bell tower signals the presence of the abbey on the horizon. In the crypt, echoes of Byzantium in the two slabs of Greek marble from a possibly Venetian workshop depicting the Annunciation, with the Madonna as Greek as can be. Nordic, instead, is the Madonna holding on her knees the rigid son with a huge gash in the side, of the harrowing Vesperbild, a devotional sculpture of Germanic origin. And always in the crypt of the abbey church, one of the prized pieces of Lombard art of the 8th century, the urn of Sant’Anastasia, in whose marble is represented the mystery of the cross, the flowering cross around which life bursts forth, as symbolized by the typical Lombard stylizations: vegetal decorations, flowers, and plants, the same ones found in the countryside around Sesto.
