Five coats of arms to discover
The abbey residence stands on the east side of piazza Castello and forms a continuous facade with the two-story building and the portico that allows access to the church vestibule. Built between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, it was expanded over the centuries.
On the sides of the two overlapping rows of windows, which lighten the wide rectangle of the facade, four coats of arms stand out, commissioned between the 17th and 18th centuries by the commendatory abbots.
The coats of arms, in order, from top left, are those of Giovanni Alberto Badoer (1707-1714), Carlo Pio di Savoia Carpi (1654-1689), Girolamo Colonna di Sciarra (1736-1763), and Giovanni Corner (1763-1789).
A fifth coat of arms is located at the far left of the facade, towards the entrance loggia of the abbey.
