San Nicolò

It is the only building in Poffabro that rises above the others, a tangible sign of the importance the community places on faith.

A simple and linear staircase elevates and makes the white facade of the building even more solemn, as arranged in the seventeenth century. From the same period is also the wooden altar still preserved. Other furnishings have been lost due to numerous renovations, although the parish church never had particularly valuable pieces given the widespread poverty prevailing in the area.

Nevertheless, the population always showed their sincere and heartfelt religious devotion by contributing to the purchase of objects to beautify the church and by building countless votive chapels scattered along the roads and fields of the village.

Art

The Church of San Nicolò Vescovo features a majestic 19th-century white facade, topped by a mosaic depicting the patron saint, with its original structure dating back to the 14th century and seemingly built on a pre-existing place of worship.

The current appearance of the building took shape around the 17th century, but it underwent continuous renovations due to frequent earthquakes. Inside, the tabernacle, which had a door painted by Francesco Guardi (18th century), is now preserved at the Museo Diocesano di Pordenone. The altar of the Rosary, made of gilded wood, is from the 17th century.

From the origins to today

The villa of Poffabro is documented from 1357 and depended on the counts of Maniago.

The church, originally rural, must have been built later, as shown by the first testimony from 1535, in the general visit of canon Sebastiano de Rubeis.

In 1584 follows the description of the building made during the pastoral visit of Cesare di Nores who qualifies: "cappella campestri set celebratur in ea in festo S. Nicolai". The church was subject to the parish of Maniago and already in 1653 the inhabitants of Poffabro obtained its detachment, although they had to wait until 1669 to see it elevated to a parish.

Between 1860 and 1703 the church underwent various expansion and restructuring works, we remember that in 1673 it was severely damaged by a fire that devastated Poffabro.

In 1734 following the earthquake it suffered new damages, it was rebuilt and completed in 1748 and consecrated in 1750 by Bishop Giacomo Maria Erizzo.

The church underwent continuous works over time and was consecrated again on July 30, 1927, by Bishop Luigi Paulini.
