The Donato Bastion

The best-preserved Bastion of the Fortress of Palmanova has been reopened to the public.

In the new visiting area of Baluardo Donato, between Porta Cividale and Porta Udine, it will be possible to admire the Loggia and the Riservetta delle munizioni, as well as a double new panoramic viewpoint on the fortifications.

With this inauguration, a zone dedicated to guided tours is completed, which includes the Contromina galleries (inaugurated in 2017) and the Loggia con galleria di Sortita (inaugurated in 2018).

The entire bastioned wall of Palmanova is traversed, in its underground, by a system of galleries, some of which are accessible and visitable. The galleries built inside the ravelins were called counter-mine galleries because they could be mined and exploded if necessary to damage approaching enemies.

Those of Baluardo Donato, several hundred meters long, illuminated and equipped, can be visited every Saturday and Sunday, from 10 to 12 and from 16 to 19 (weekday openings for groups by reservation tel. 0432 92 48 15)

At the corners of each bastion, the orecchioni, the builders of the Fortress created two loggias for the soldiers.

The one located on the left side of the bastion is equipped with an exit ramp that connects directly to the outside of the fortifications, near the moat and in front of the counter-mine galleries.

This was used for troop movements, also equipped with pikes up to six meters long, and for mounted troops. The one on the right was used by the troops as a guard post and shelter, equipped inside with a fireplace and several niches for placing lighting. On the left, climbing to the top of the bastion, there is another small underground construction, a riservetta intended for the storage of powders.

This area, for now, will be visitable only by guided groups or on special occasions (for example, the Pasquetta sui Bastioni or the Rievocazione Storica di settembre).
