The Statues of the "Provveditori"
In Piazza Grande, the statues of eleven of the general provveditori (superintendents) who governed the city of Palmanova welcome visitors.
This position, established since the founding of the fortress, was considered among the most prestigious of the Republic of Venice, as it opened the way to the potential position of Doge. Their specific identification is uncertain since, in 1691, the inscriptions and coats of arms carved on the pedestals of these sculptures were erased due to a law that aimed to avoid the cult of personality of individual officials of the Republic. The only known epigraph, reproduced in a family manuscript, is the one dedicated to the provveditore Giovanni Sagredo (1660).
