Gradisca and the palaces between Venice and Empire

Guided tours in the village

A walk in the center of Gradisca d'Isonzo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Established in the 1400s as a Venetian fortress to counter Turkish invasions, the town is today a journey through the history of these lands where the legacy of the Serenissima blends with that of the Habsburg Empire.

Description of the experience

Gradisca d'Isonzo is a small town on the outskirts of Gorizia, nestled on the right bank of the Isonzo and not far from the first climbs leading to the Karst plateau. An ideal destination for walks suitable for everyone, it encompasses a centuries-old history with elements linked to the history of Venice dating back to the 15th-16th century, the Habsburgs (together with Gorizia it gave the name to the Princely County), and finally the events of the 20th century. A long and fascinating history summarized in the Colonna della Redenzione, in front of the central Piazza Unità and a stop on the guided tour.

The walk along the streets of the center will allow you to observe the most symbolic buildings such as Palazzo Torriani and Palazzo Strassoldo as well as the Venetian fortifications of the 15th century like Porta Nuova (with the bust of Leonardo da Vinci) and the bastions of the Castle, exceptionally visitable during the tour.
