Tiere Motus
The permanent museum dedicated to the 1976 earthquake guides the visitor along the significant stages of the rebirth journey that began on May 6 of that same year and has characterized the history of Friuli up to the present day.
The unusual title combines expressions from two noble and ancient languages inherent to the history of this land: the Friulian Tiere (=Earth) and the Latin Motus (=Motion).
Tiere as a meaning of identity, deep emotions, and a high sense of belonging to the Friulian land and culture.
Motus as an intense call to origins and mother history, but above all to the strength of a people to overcome two millennia of human events and hostile natural events.
The Orcolat, the terrifying creature that in popular tradition personifies the earthquake, is awakened thanks to virtual reality techniques that simulate the collapse of the Duomo of Venzone during those terrible tremors. The 3D graphic simulation was created on scientific bases with the collaboration of a team of experts from various fields, from engineering to computer graphics.
The rooms on the first floor narrate, in chronological order first, and thematic order later, the crucial moments of the earthquake and reconstruction through the exhibition of photographs, films, documents, and illustrative diagrams that show the close intertwining of technical-scientific, socio-economic, and political-administrative aspects.
In the images that depict the first moments of the tragedy, the faces portrayed express bewilderment in the face of nature, but also reveal moral strength, tenacity, and determination in a generous rush to aid and solidarity.
A room in the museum is dedicated to the summer of 1976: an extremely difficult period during which the earthquake-stricken population is forced to live under tents and life resumes with great difficulty. However, this is also the moment to strongly claim participation in the decisions on reconstruction.
The new tremors recorded between September 11 and 15, 1976, are a devastating seismic swarm that plunges Friuli into an even more complex situation: autumn is recounted through images of the exodus and places of evacuation. Subsequently, the reconstruction: the years of the “baracche” begin.
The second part of the exhibition develops through thematic rooms: the legislative framework, studies for reconstruction (geology and seismic engineering), the “Governo della Ricostruzione” with state and regional institutions, the role of the Friulian Church, cultural heritage, planning and implementation tools for the territory, the flow of funding and contributions granted, development with the birth of another Friuli, consisting of major infrastructure works and industry, but also the birth of the University and Civil Protection.
Finally, the Gold Medal for Civil Merit awarded by the Head of State to the Banners of the Region and the 45 devastated municipalities.
The museum concludes with a room dedicated to memory, in a multimedia journey through the large amount of documents (audio, video, texts, images) produced at the time of the earthquake and which is enriched day by day.
The room is animated by a double projection: one represents on a model of the Region the repetition of the '76 tremors and their strength and the other reproduces, on a large wall, the names of the victims that appear and dissolve. On the “wall of memory,” the visitor can freely record their own testimony.
