Architecture

The architectural complex in Sappada is generally composed of two buildings: the main house and the barn with the hayloft. Each house in the village was rustic and simple but spacious and functional, built almost entirely of wood according to the "Blockbau" system: horizontally stacked beams, interlocked at the corners and resting on a stone base. This typical architecture has been preserved especially along Sappada Vecchia, in the hamlets of Mühlbach, Cottern, Hoffe, Fontana, Kratten, Soravia, Ecche, Puiche, Cretta. The hamlet of Pill (which overlooks the central area) has also preserved magnificent examples of Blockbau houses. Cima Sappada is located in a dominant and panoramic position over the entire Sappada valley; there are numerous wooden houses, and for some years it has been possible to visit Spanglar’s Haus, an ancient Blockhaus from the late 1700s perfectly maintained, where you can see the dwelling as it was in the past, including the ancient stone hearth with the historic smokehouse. In the heart of the hamlet, "Zepodar Sende", the old dairy, has been recently renovated and is now visible. It is worth noting that "Sappada Vecchia" is somewhat everywhere in the valley. In the village, there is indeed a magical atmosphere that blends well with the achievements of modernity, thanks to the ability to combine the new with tradition, even in newly constructed homes. In the administrative center of Sappada, however, there is a clear example of "rifabbrico": the houses were rebuilt in masonry following two serious fires that struck the hamlets of Bach in 1908 and Granvilla in 1928.
