LA MORTEANE (PART DAL FANTAT)
from a lost text by Pier Paolo Pasolini

“In theater, I wrote a one-act play, ‘La Morteana’ (the title is derived from a verse by Colloredo)”
Pasolini is twenty-three years old and is experiencing that extraordinary Friulian season which will abruptly end only four years later, with the escape to Rome, opening a new season of his life and his poetics. ‘La Morteana’ was destined to be performed shortly thereafter by the small Compagnia dell’Academiuta, which Pasolini himself directed. But this never happened, and the reasons for this failure of the venture are unknown.
Indeed, unlike the contemporary ‘I Turcs tal Friul’, which has reached us, nothing more was known about ‘La Morteana’ until the fortuitous discovery of a part of the script, specifically the ‘Part dal Fantat’, which emerged from a desk drawer many years later.
The rediscovered manuscript contains only the lines that were supposed to be spoken by what is deduced to be the protagonist of the play, a circumstance that corresponds to Pasolini's habit of providing each actor not with the complete text, but only their part in the work to be performed.
